September 3, 2011

Citing technology blog TechCrunch, Moneycontrol reported that Amazon intends to float a back-lit 7-inch screen tablet which is smaller, and cheaper than Apple’s iPad tablet in November.

The device to be sold at $250, is supposed to play music and movies off the internet. The blog which has tested its prototype, reported that the the company planned to offer Amazon Prime which is its $79-a-year Internet streaming service free of cost along with the gadget.

The blog cited Forrester Research estimates which predict that if it defeats the iPad on price, it may sell as many as 5 million tablets in the fourth quarter. Apple sells 7 to 9 million tablets a quarter.

The new arrival which will be functioning on operating system developed from an older version of Google’s Android software, will be Wi-Fi only and it will come with a color touchscreen but a limited 6GB of memory.

Without citing the source, the blog also reported that the on line retailer may also launch 10-inch version in 2012, if the 7-inch version does well. The tablet’s main screen has a carousel that pins between a book-reader, a music player, movie player and other applications.
